These crispy air fryer mozzarella sticks are an easy, quick snack with a golden crunchy exterior and gooey cheese inside, perfect for any occasion and healthier than traditional frying.

  • 12 mozzarella cheese sticks (about 1 pound or 450 grams), preferably whole milk mozzarella
  • 1 cup (120 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 ½ cups (150 grams) Italian-style bread crumbs
  • ¼ cup (25 grams) grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs (basil, oregano, thyme mix)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Olive oil or avocado oil cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Unwrap mozzarella sticks and pat dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. Place on a tray and freeze for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Set up three bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with a mixture of bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, dried Italian herbs, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Coat each frozen mozzarella stick by rolling in flour, tapping off excess, dipping in eggs, then rolling in breadcrumb mixture. Repeat the egg and breadcrumb coating for extra crunch.
  4. Place coated sticks on a baking sheet or plate and freeze for at least 15 minutes before cooking.
  5. Preheat air fryer to 390°F (200°C) for 3-5 minutes.
  6. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Arrange sticks in a single layer without overcrowding and spray tops with cooking spray.
  7. Air fry for 6-8 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy. Watch closely near the end to avoid burning.
  8. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Freeze mozzarella sticks before and after coating to prevent cheese from leaking during cooking. Double coating with egg and breadcrumbs enhances crunch. Use cooking spray to achieve golden crisp without excess oil. Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket for even cooking. If sticks brown too fast, lower temperature to 375°F and add extra cooking time.
