A cozy, easy-to-make casserole combining the nostalgic flavors of a cheeseburger with crispy golden fries, perfect for weeknight dinners or potlucks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 32 oz (900 g) frozen French fries (crinkle-cut preferred)
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) tomato ketchup
  • 2 tbsp (30 ml) yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups (200 g) shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup (100 g) shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) olive oil
  • Optional: pickle slices or jalapeños for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add chopped onion and sauté for about 3 minutes until softened.
  3. Add minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add ground beef, break it up with a spatula, and cook until browned and no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.
  5. Stir in ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 2 minutes to meld flavors. Remove from heat.
  6. Spread half of the frozen fries evenly in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  7. Top fries with half of the cooked beef mixture, then sprinkle with half of the shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses.
  8. Repeat layers with remaining fries, beef mixture, and cheese.
  9. Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly and fries are crispy.
  10. Optional: Broil casserole for 1-2 minutes for extra crispiness, watching closely to prevent burning.
  11. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Do not thaw frozen fries before baking to maintain crispiness. Drain excess fat from beef to avoid greasiness. Rest casserole after baking to set. Broil briefly at the end for extra crispiness if desired. For gluten-free, use gluten-free ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and fries. Vegetarian versions can use plant-based crumbles or lentils.
