A quick and easy comfort food casserole featuring crispy tater tots, savory ground beef, and melty cheddar cheese, perfect for family meals and potlucks.

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup (gluten-free if needed)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (120 ml)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (200 g), sharp or mild
  • 1 (32 oz) bag frozen tater tots
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.
  3. Add chopped onion to the beef and cook until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well, then remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  5. In a medium bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup and sour cream. Stir until smooth and creamy.
  6. Add the cooled beef mixture to the bowl and mix to evenly coat.
  7. Spread the beef and creamy mixture evenly in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  8. Sprinkle 1 cup (100 g) of shredded cheddar cheese over the beef mixture.
  9. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer on top of the cheese.
  10. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden and crispy and the cheese is bubbly.
  11. Remove from oven and sprinkle the remaining 1 cup (100 g) of cheddar cheese on top. Return to oven for 5 more minutes until cheese melts.
  12. Sprinkle chopped green onions over the casserole before serving.
  13. Let the casserole rest 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Do not thaw tater tots before baking to maintain crispiness. Drain excess fat after browning beef to avoid greasiness. If tater tots brown too quickly, tent with foil halfway through baking. Let casserole rest before serving for better texture.
