Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (227 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup (165 g) packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups (280 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (50 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups (270 g) semi-sweet chocolate chips or chunks
  • Optional: sea salt flakes for sprinkling on top

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  2. In a large bowl, beat 1 cup softened unsalted butter with 3/4 cup granulated sugar and 3/4 cup packed brown sugar on medium speed for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in 2 large eggs, one at a time, then stir in 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring on low speed or folding gently with a spatula until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  6. Fold in 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips or chunks.
  7. Using a medium cookie scoop or spoon, drop dough balls about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  8. Gently press a few extra chocolate chips onto the top of each dough ball to create fudge puddles.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are set and slightly crisp but centers look soft. Do not overbake.
  10. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For extra fudgy centers, slightly underbake by 1-2 minutes. Chilling dough for 30 minutes helps control spreading. Use room temperature ingredients for best texture. Press extra chocolate chips on top before baking for signature fudge puddles.
