  • 2 cans (21 oz each) fruit pie filling (cherry, blueberry, or apple) or 4 cups frozen mixed berries, thawed
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) dry yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, sliced thinly
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts)
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Spread the fruit filling evenly in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  3. Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the fruit layer.
  4. Dot the sliced butter over the cake mix, covering as much surface as possible.
  5. Optional: Sprinkle cinnamon or nuts on top.
  6. Bake uncovered for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the fruit is bubbly.
  7. Remove from oven and let cool for 10–15 minutes.
  8. Serve warm, ideally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

If the top browns too quickly, tent loosely with foil midway through baking. For extra crispiness, broil for 5 minutes at the end. Use gluten-free cake mix and check fruit fillings for gluten to make gluten-free. Substitute butter with dairy-free margarine or coconut oil for dairy-free version. Fresh fruit can be used with sugar and cornstarch to thicken juices.
