Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • Sea salt (optional)
  • Extra chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line your baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, use a hand or stand mixer to beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together until light and fluffy. This should take about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Mix in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract. Beat until combined and smooth.
  4. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. Don’t overmix—the dough should be soft and slightly sticky.
  5. Using a spatula, gently fold in 1 cup of chocolate chips and any optional nuts. Reserve the remaining ½ cup of chocolate chips for the gooey center.
  6. Scoop out about 1 ½ tablespoons of dough and roll into balls. Flatten each ball slightly and press a few chocolate chips into the center before reshaping into a ball.
  7. Place the cookie dough balls on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart to allow room for spreading.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown but the centers still look slightly undercooked.
  9. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
