Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup (150g) brown sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups (280g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups (270g) chocolate chips
  • Optional: Nuts (e.g., walnuts or pecans)
  • Optional: Sea salt
  • Optional: Food coloring (pink or red)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line your baking sheets with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat 1 cup (230g) of unsalted butter, 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar, and 3/4 cup (150g) brown sugar until light and fluffy. This should take about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add 1 large egg and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Beat until thoroughly combined, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 1/4 cups (280g) all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined. Don’t overmix—this ensures your cookies stay tender!
  6. Fold in 1 1/2 cups (270g) chocolate chips using a spatula or wooden spoon.
  7. Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes. This step helps the cookies maintain their shape while baking.
  8. Once chilled, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Use your heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out shapes.
  9. Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches of space between each cookie.
  10. Bake for 9-11 minutes until the edges are lightly golden. Keep a close eye—overbaking will make them crunchy instead of chewy.
  11. Remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
