A comforting and visually stunning dish featuring sweet potatoes baked in a creamy, spiced sauce with a golden cheese crust. Perfect for holiday gatherings or any special occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 45 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease your baking dish lightly with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Peel and slice the sweet potatoes into thin rounds, about 1/8 inch thick. Use a mandoline or sharp knife.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together heavy cream, whole milk, melted butter, minced garlic, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and ground black pepper until smooth.
  4. Arrange half of the sliced sweet potatoes in an even layer in the baking dish. Pour half of the cream mixture over the potatoes, spreading it evenly. Repeat with the remaining sweet potatoes and cream mixture.
  5. Sprinkle shredded Gruyère cheese evenly over the top layer of sweet potatoes.
  6. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  7. Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to thicken. Garnish with fresh thyme or parsley if desired.
