Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon paprika (smoked or sweet)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: pinch of brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Gather all your spices and measure each ingredient precisely.
  2. Combine all spices in a small mixing bowl.
  3. Use a whisk or spoon to mix the spices thoroughly until uniform in color and texture, about 1-2 minutes.
  4. Break apart any clumps by pressing the mix between your fingers or using the back of a spoon.
  5. Transfer the seasoning mix to an airtight container or spice jar and label with the date.
  6. Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
  7. Use about 2 tablespoons of seasoning mix per 1 pound of ground meat or vegetables.
  8. When seasoning meat, sprinkle gradually and taste as you go.
  9. Rest seasoned meat for about 10 minutes before cooking to allow flavors to meld.

Notes

Toast ground cumin and chili powder briefly in a dry pan before mixing to enhance flavor. Adjust crushed red pepper flakes to control heat level. Store seasoning mix in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Add a splash of lime juice after cooking to brighten flavors. Rest seasoned meat before cooking for better flavor infusion.
